LOS ANGELES – Nonito Donaire was knocked out by the undefeated Jamaican Nicholas Walters with only one second remaining in the sixth round this Saturday for the World Boxing Association featherweight title.
A powerful overhand right of Walters landed straight to the left temple of Donaire collapsing to the canvas. Raul Caiz, the referee, counted out the champion at 2:59 of the 6th round.
Donaire being 'The Filipino Flash' was never KO'd in his entire boxing career, but this time he was sent to the canvas by the 'Axe Man' Nicholas Walters taking away the championship belt from him.
“I invited him in and then I caught him with that powerful shot. It was tough work. He’s a super world champion. He caught me with a few shots early.” Walters said.
“He knocked the (wits) out of me,” Donaire said. “I was at my best. I never trained this hard. He came out as tough as I thought he would be.” said the former champion, Donaire.
At the age of 28, Walters has a record of 25-0 and took home his first world title. On the other hand, Donaire now has 33-3 and said that a reevaluation on his career plans is needed probably going down to the lower weight class as he was unable to deal with the larger size like Walters who opened up a cut over the right eye of the former champion.
“I’ve got to go back to the drawing board. I just can’t compete with guys like Walters. He was overwhelming. I couldn’t match his size and his power.” said Donaire
