The Christian God is often depicted in art as a bearded old man. But there is a rather bizarre claim by Joe Lewels, the author of The God Hypothesis: Extraterrestrial Life and Its Implications for Science and Religion. According to him, The God of the Israelites may have been a praying mantis. He believes that it is the reason why he didn't want to reveal his appearance to humanity.
Joe Jewels is an ufologist, he made an extensive research about the defunct sect called Mandeans. While conducting his research he met a lady named Rebecca Grant. Rebecca claimed that she made a contact with a spiritual mantis named MU or Master of the Universe. The MU warned her about the incoming cataclysm as a result of the worsening global warming. The MU told Rebecca that mankind will be extinct in the 21st Century. Since Rebecca said that the creature is named MU or Master of The Universe, Joe Jewels concluded that Rebecca might have seen the Abrahamic God.
Joe Lewels gained legions of detractors when his book was published in 1997.
A book critic said:
Embracing the idea that God is a praying mantis is so far out there it sucks for humor. If God is a praying mantis, what is IT praying to? If a man prays to a mantis, do you realize it is a prayer to prey-er?
Joe Lewels could have investigated the cases of the sightings of mantis-like aliens and abductions instead of asserting that the Mantis that Rebecca saw was, in fact, the Christian God. It is also interesting to note that occultist Aleister Crowley was also fascinated by praying mantises. He said that praying mantises are basically blaspheming grasshoppers.
